Ancient academies in China are distinctive cultural and educational institutions and systems. From the middle of the Tang Dynasty to the reform of education in the late Qing Dynasty, academies, as a major cultural teaching organization, had continued for more than 1,000 years. Songyang Academy is the birthplace of neo-confucianism in the Song Dynasty, bearing the mission of "inheriting the lost doctrines for the saints of the past”. Famous for its rich culture and unique cultural relics in ancient and modern times, Songyang Academy is known as one of the four ancient academies in China, together with Yingtian Academy in Shangqiu, Henan Province, Yuelu Academy in Hunan Province and Bailudong Academy in Jiangxi Province.

中国古代书院是独具特色的文化教育机构和教育制度。从唐朝中期开始至晚清教育改制，书院作为一种主要的文化教学组织延续了1000多年。嵩阳书院是宋代理学的发源地，承载了“为往圣继绝学”的使命，其以文化赡富、文物奇特名扬古今，与河南商丘应天书院、湖南岳麓书院、江西白鹿洞书院并称为我国古代四大书院。
