一、consist不及物动词。“（和of连用）由......构成、包含有；（和in连用）（内容）主要是、主要在于”。consist表示一个整体由几个部分组成，主语为整体，of后的宾语是组成部分。例如：

This soup consists of tomatoes, meat and peas.这汤有西红柿、肉和豌豆。

The middle school consists of 25 classes.这所中学有二十五个教学班。

The beauty of Venice consists in the style of it's ancient buildings. 威尼斯的美主要是表现在她那些古老建筑的风格。

二、constitute 及物动词。意思是“构成、建立（机构）”等。constitute表示由部分构成一个整体。主语为部分，宾语为整体，正好与consist of 相反。例如：

Seven days constitute a week. 七天构成一个星期。

Listening，speaking，reading，then writing constitute the fundamental order in language learning.听、说、读、写是组成语言学习中基础的东西。

Four quarts constitute a gallon. 四夸脱是一加仑。
