短语动词系列-Account for, 你怎能只知道"解释"这一种意思呢？

我们继续来看实用短语动词系列，今天要讲到的短语动词是 Account for。

Account for / əˋkaʊnt fɔr/ 有几种意思，其中一个意思是用来表示“解释"或"说明" 某个事情发生的原因。

例如：

How do you account for the fact that the house was on fire.你怎么解释房子着火了呢？

这个短语还可以表示下面的意思：

-占（某部分）；数量为...

例如：

Car crime accounted for 30% of all reported offences.汽车犯罪占到了所有报告犯罪的30%。The investment accounts for just 20% of the budget.投资仅占预算的20%。

-（在事故或者自然灾害之后）了解，查明...

例如：

All the people who were working in the building have now been accounted for.所有当时在大楼中工作的人现在都有了下落。

跟这个短语相关的还有一个惯用语，there's no accounting for taste（人各有所好，好恶是无法解释的）

例如：

She seems like you. 她好像喜欢你。There's no accounting for taste. 感情的事情是说不明白的。
